Doctoral Student Colloquium

The i-Conference 2006 planning committee is initiating a one-day Doctoral Colloquium at the event, inviting advanced Ph.D. students to a day of intellectual exchange and cohort building, to present their dissertation work-in-progress to their colleagues and a group of well known faculty from the iSchools. The Colloquium will begin with a welcoming dinner on Saturday, October 14, and will run all day October 15, leading to the i-Conference reception Sunday evening.

The accepted students will have their conference registration, travel, and hotel paid for the entire conference. Dinner and meals on Sunday are also covered. We expect participants to give a talk at the Colloquium, prepare a poster for display at the conference, and write a two-page description of their work (including their photograph), to be bound into a booklet available to everyone at the conference.

Applicants should submit three items by e-mail to jsolson at umich dot edu, with subject line "i-Conference Colloquium submission from <applicant's name>":

  1. A two-page overview of your dissertation research that describes the research question, work in progress, and expected contributions. The overview should include an abstract of no more than 100 words and should be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings Template. Submissions must be in PDF format.
  2. A CV including the year you entered your program and when you expect to graduate.
  3. An e-mail letter from your supervisor sent to jsolson at umich dot edu, indicating that he or she supports your application and agrees that your research is at an appropriate stage for participation. Any other statements about the quality of your work and when your supervisor expects you to graduate are welcome. The e-mail should have "i-Conference Doctoral Colloquium: <applicant's name>" in the subject header.

All items are due Monday, August 21, 2006 by midnight EDT. Any questions can be addressed to the Chair of the Doctoral Colloquium, Judith Olson, University of Michigan, jsolson@umich.edu.
